    Yes, even very dim light can be enough to disrupt your sleep: an LED alarm clock, a streetlamp filtering through the blinds, or simply the early rising sun in summer. The human body is programmed to associate darkness with sleep and light with wakefulness — and it takes very little to scramble this signal.

    The direct link between light and sleep quality

    Our body regulates sleep through a precise mechanism: melatonin, the sleep hormone, is secreted by the brain when light decreases, and its production is inhibited as soon as it detects light — even through closed eyelids. This explains why one can sleep for several hours in a poorly darkened room without ever reaching truly deep sleep: the body remains partially alert, ready to wake up at the slightest light signal.

    This phenomenon particularly affects certain profiles: people who work at night and must sleep during the day, those who travel frequently and change time zones, residents of cities where street lighting remains visible at night, or simply those experiencing a period of light or fragmented sleep.

    Conventional solutions all have their limits

    Faced with this problem, the usual responses are blackout curtains, shutters, or simply "getting used to it." But these solutions have their flaws: blackout curtains almost always let a sliver of light filter through the edges, shutters block nothing once the sun is up if the room is not perfectly sealed, and getting used to poorer quality sleep does not correct its effects — fatigue upon waking, more frequent nocturnal awakenings, a feeling of non-restorative sleep.
